The consulting and auditing industry - an indispensable pillar of the Swiss economy.

A market study by EXPERTsuisse and ASCO

Eraneos Group was among the 839 participating consulting and auditing firms surveyed by ASCO and EXPERTsuisse in a comprehensive study in 2021. The study provides the first nationwide overview of the industry, with a uniform structuring of the offering into management consulting, advisory, audit and outsourcing/business services.

The Covid 19 crisis once again impressively demonstrated that the consulting and auditing industry is an indispensable pillar for the Swiss economy. In retrospect, the industry has proven to be a backbone during the crisis and in view of the future it has positioned itself as a proactive partner of a strong Swiss economy. The current market study presents a resilient industry that has not only recognized the current challenges, but is also actively working to further develop and strengthen job profiles, forms of cooperation and the positioning of the industry as a relevant market player.

The consulting and auditing industry helped the Swiss economy to get through the Covid 19 crisis as good as possible. As the guest article by Christian Mauz, Partner Eraneos Group, also confirms, many organizations became aware during the pandemic that there is no way around digitalization to preserve their own competitiveness. Accordingly, Covid-19 has significantly increased demand for services relating to transformation and digitalization topics, cyber security, cloud services, data analytics and data protection.

Those who focus on "New Work & Leadership" will emerge as winners

The study results show that market development in this heterogeneous sector continues to be very dynamic. The outlook for the future is characterized by a positive basic mood throughout the industry. However, competition for the best talent on the market is just as fierce as the market for client mandates. In addition, ecosystems redefining collaboration between customers, suppliers and partners are emerging. The industry must be prepared to adopt these changes, as they affect collaboration within the company as much as client interactions.

On the client side, as well as on the part of the firms surveyed, there is a consensus that changing job profiles, new work models, and gender and skills diversity will shape the post-Covid 19 era. According to the current survey, 40% of employees at the firms surveyed are already women. It is interesting to note that at board level, the large firms are ahead of the small ones in terms of the proportion of women, at 21% versus 15%, while at senior management level, the small ones have better gender diversity at 23% than the very large ones at 14%.

With regard to the compatibility of work and family, possible part-time work for women and men is increasingly proving to be a significant competitive factor. Among the more than 24,000 employees at the firms surveyed, the average workload ranges from 79% to 94%, depending on the size of the firm. Part-time work is particularly prevalent among smaller firms, while large firms have some catching up to do in this regard.

Outlook

In specific terms, the respondents see an increase in projects in the areas of procurement and supply chains, particularly among the large players, as well as rising demand for strategy projects related to sustainability issues. Furthermore, the development and expansion of technology competencies will continue. Hence, services in the competence areas of digitalization, cloud, cyber security, data protection and data analytics will continue to be in high demand in the coming months and years.
